About Us

The Church of the Advent in Brownsville was established in 1851 by a group of Episcopalian citizens and army personnel stationed at Fort Brown. During the great hurricane of 1867, the first church building was destroyed, however a replica was rebuilt and completed by 1877. In the 1920’s the Elizabeth Street property was acquired and the present Spanish Colonial Revival Style building was completed in 1927 and is now a recorded Texas Historic Landmark which celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2001.

Mission Statement:

“Our Lord calls those of us who are members of The Church of the Advent to be faithful in our worship and to each other. We are a Spiritual Community of women, men and children learning how to serve our Lord, day by day. The Ministries and Programs here at Advent are designed to help us discover not only who we are as a people of God, but who we can be for the community around us. We are called to make a difference in the lives of the people in our community. We proclaim God’s love by what we believe, how we try to live, and by what we do. Worship is our starting point, the place where we come together to be one with our Lord and each other. Then, having been fed and equipped, to go out and serve the world around us in Jesus’ name.”

Vision

“That Church of the Advent is a cup of strength to our neighbors in need and that every true need brought to Church of the Advent is met with Christ’s loving kindness.”

We are a work in progress.
